Though Hallen is an RP muse he doesn’t have a jurisdiction on incoming bunnies. When he’s around he just sits there with a spaced out smile on his face and grins placatingly at Eldu, Lovai and me when one of us looks peeved. He smiles at Eldu a fair bit.
Hallen looks like a fairy that’s had their wings removed. He’s very dainty, which is accentuated by his short stature of 5’4 - with light features and thin fingers. He has very small feet. His eyes are a glassy olive green and his longish hair’s a messy blonde. But he looks like someone’s flicked him with brown; there are pale brown patches in his eyes and large brown sections in his hair. He’s slightly tanned as well which adds to this. He’s usually got mud under his fingernails and maybe some smirches on his face and hands depending on what he’s been investigating. We don’t know how old he is but he seems to be a young adult, though Eldu thinks the magic is stopping his aging so he could be older. His behaviour doesn’t place him in any one age bracket either; he acts like a curious child but has adult capabilities where taking care of himself is concerned.
His clothes seem like a clue as to what his world is like but could also be a lost-leader. His topcoat is most like a frock-coat, which was once a warm moss green but is now faded and stained from lichen and the like (not through neglect but through his climbing damp trees). This suggests turn of the 19th century levels of technology but he’s never sketched anything that advanced, though this could be because he lives in a backwards area of his world. His white smock-shirt has gone the same way as his coat and that, along with his simple trousers and shoes, could come from any era from the medieval period onwards.
Hallen is sweet as a button. (Eldu the Cynic thinks he wouldn’t be so cute if he spoke.) He’s usually smiling and often looks interested in things about him, though that could be because he’s not all there. He isn’t the sharpest knife in the box but that’s part of his charm. He’s so fascinated with the things he finds in his own world that he doesn’t find anything in this world any more fascinating – it would be impossible. He drew himself staring at an oak tree near his home with the same intensity with which he stared at the other people on the Underground (while happily perched on Lovai’s lap because the carriage was crowded) when Lovai took him to a London doctor to see why he was mute (they found nothing). Though he can look after himself, he doesn’t mind being infantised. And even though he can look after himself getting him to interact with others can be tricky as he has a short attention span and sometimes gets so wrapped up in his own world that he doesn’t see or hear what’s actually going on around him. So you have to say his name with increasing volume until he snaps out of his daydream. But he’ll always greet you with an honest smile when he does so it’s almost impossible to be annoyed with him.
A large part of his personality is tied up with his magic. Apart from the usual NVC, Hallen communicates with butterflies he makes in palms. Each different combination of colour, pattern and sheen shows a different emotion (Eldu, Lovai and I are just trying to crack what they mean. This may take some time). It seems that these can be made consciously – in response to a question like ‘how are you feeling?’ - or subconsciously when an emotion is particularly strong. They can have one of three colours around the edges of the wings: black edges are when the emotion is his; black edges with a large glittering gold section means the emotion is how he thinks the person it flies to is feeling; and the same as gold only with silver is how he thinks an absent third party feels. The meanings can be surprisingly subtle. For example when Lovai said something idiotic Hallen made a butterfly with the colouring we know to mean embarrassment with black and gold around the edges. So he thought Lovai was feeling embarrassed ie because of what he said, so he was telling Lovai he thought his remark was stupid.
Hallen is mute so the rest of us don’t know much about him, not even his real name. He sometimes makes a noise when he laughs so I guess the same goes for when he cries or is scared. He’s also illiterate but he’s a good artist so basically all of what we know about him comes from the sketches he’s made in response to questions. He lives in an old wooden manor house in the middle of a sub-tropical forest which turns into swamp somewhere. The damp’s got in it so it’s rotting away but he lives in his own little world so he doesn’t mind. He’s always lived there and the house has always been rotting. He likes wandering so he leaves this house often but he always comes back sooner or later. There are two other people in this house who seem to be his adoptive parents. The man is some kind of reclusive shaman or mage and the woman is just ordinary. Hallen loves them both dearly and, though the shaman/mage ignores him, they love him in return and make sure he’s well cared for. Eldu thinks the shaman bought him from his birth parents and gave him his magic – we don’t think Hallen was born magical because of the red marks on his palms from whence his butterflies come. These marks don’t hurt him but they seem to be remnants of when this magic was given to him as a baby. Eldu also thinks this is why he doesn’t talk - his magic gives him his own perfectly good way of communicating so, while he understands spoken words, he never thought he should communicate that way - but the jury’s out on that one. What we all agree on is Lovai’s suggestion; that Hallen is away with the fairies because he spent his early childhood in isolation so he never moved out of the imaginary friend stage and instead this make-believe world grew and grew. It doesn’t seem apart from the real world, though, more like he interprets the real world in a more magical way.
He loves Eldu and Lovai: he always has a beaming smile when he meets them. He jumped up and down with excitement when Eldu brought him a black emperor as large as his hand that the Sinda had brought from his realm. He’s managed to – with no effort- wrap not just Lovai around his little finger, which to be honest is easily done, but Eldu, which is pretty amazing, so with Main Man on side he’s here to stay.
He hasn’t met anyone else’s muses yet though he’ll probably adore those he does meet too.
