When the door closed, Phoenix settled beside Callier's bed.
"Thank you," he said, quietly, pulling his gloves off and folding them in his lap. He then remembered why he'd been wearing them in the first place, but he reckoned against Callier noticing in her current position. Besides he had a comeback if she did. He looked at her and winced. She was much stronger than him; had he been in such a state he wouldn't let anyone see him.
"I missed you."

Callier smiled slightly.
"I'm sure I could return the sentiment had I been in any condition to think." She let her eyes slip shut, exhaustion washing over her again. "Forgive me," her voice trailed off, lips barely moving. "I'm listening. I'm just...easily tired..." She swallowed, breathing quietly for a moment before she could assemble the next words.
"How was your visit home?"

Annoyance flicked across the Elf's face, "This now is my visit. Home is where I live." He huffed, then calmed himself. This wasn't fair; why was he now beating himself up about saying that? It wasn't his doing that the sisters couldn't go home. He'd sworn not to care about anyone here... but then he'd known when he decided to come here first that he would still care about Callier.
"It was normal," he said eventually. "My son got atacked by wargs, my niece fell out of a tree, I was tempted to kill the whole Dwarven court; the usual stuff. Does Alex's daughter lose it often?"

Callier smiled faintly.
"Fair enough." She agreed tiredly, shifting as her wings flickered uselessly behind her. "She's lost it twice that I know of. And now she's been kidnapped by her grandfather." Her eyes slid shut on a soft sigh as exhaustion surfaced to weigh her down.
"You know," she murmured, barely aware of what she was saying. "I had forgotten how exhausting just...being in pain could be." The ghost of a smile flickered across her worn out features. "Having an incorporeal form will do that to you."

Phoenix nodded, "Poor kid." He huffed a laugh at Callier's comment and his eyes sparkled with strange amusement for a second. "I take it you can't shift form at the moment, then?"

Callier shook her head weakly, eyes too heavy to open.
"I have neither the energy nor the inclination." She announced grandly, voice a little thready. She laughed, shifting to push herself onto her back then flinching and rolling onto her stomach instead. "I can't really do anything at the moment." She replied tiredly.

Phoenix watched her, a smile, caused by her dogged determination, pulling on his mouth. "I can see that," he said as she rolled over. "I'm sorry, I obviously came at a bad time... it was difficult to get back here." He watched her for a while, annoyed at the feeling of helplessness niggling in his stomach. "Can I get you anything?" He asked eventually. If she said yes it would mean facing Kira but he was up for the challange.

Callier shook her head, hair tangling on the pillow.
"No," she sighed. "Kira's thought of almost everything." Another faint smile flickered across her face at the thought of her sister, then she frowned, finally blinking her eyes back open. "I'm sorry she attacked you like that," she said. "She's just a bit...protective."

"It's nothing," Phoenix reassured her, "I know why she's doing it." He looked at the closed door and wondered if Kira was standing right behind it, "Though I often have this terrible urge to wind the overprotective up." He pouted, "I daren't wind Kira up though, not with that sword in the hall."

Callier smiled up at him, eyes clearing slowly.
"The sword is mine." She pointed out. Then she sighed softly. "It's good to see you Phoenix. When you left I had thought...perhaps you would not return." Her smile faded a little, self-deprication in her tone. "I'll admit I was angry for a time."

Phoenix smiled lopsidedly, "It's a pretty sword.
"And I'm not surprised. I was furious when my father ignored me for months and I knew he was still around. You're doing well, better than I did." He didn't mention that this was because the court were deciding which lord to make king and that in the end he'd thrown a galss decanter at the back of his father's head. He smiled at the memory though, not at the deed but at the fact that he had once been much more out of control than he was now.
"Though," he said, dragging his thoughts back to Callier, "I am sure that once you feel up to it you'll scream and shout and throw things. Remind me to get out of the way when that time comes, for both our sakes." His smile widened in thankfulness as he replayed the moment when the lord who had been speaking to his father yelled at him to duck, thus saving him from having shards of glass embedded in his scalp.

Callier laughed weakly, shifting again as the convulsions shook her loose from a momentarily comfortable position.
"I suspect your ears and limbs will remain intact." She confided. "My temper is quick but it burns out without fuel." She sighed softly, eyes slipping shut once more. "And I have little enough energy for continued existence, let alone excess emotion." Her lips twitched a little bitterly. "Time was I had none but I found no release." She shook her head, forcing her eyes back open. "But that time has passed. No my friend, it is not my temper you have to fear. Kira holds grudges like nobody's business."

Phoenix watched his friend nervously. Some how her calm attitude was even more unsettling than her temper; maybe it was because he hadn't expected it. He almost laughed at mention of Kira's grudges. If he did fall victim of one of them it would be rather ironic.
"Are you sure there's nothing you want to chide me about?" He asked after a while, his desibelief rising, "I abandoned you for seven months and then swanned in here like I come over every week for a cuppa and a chat! If someone did that to me I'd..." He trailed off and got up, unclasping his cloak and leaving it and his gloves on the chair. He moved over to lean on one of the walls and looked down at her, arms folded, the ghost of a frown on his face. "There must be something."

Callier watched him, shifting her head to see then wincing when the position was uncomfortable.
"I was dying." She said softly, eyes distant and hazy with the exhaustion and memory. "For three months I was dying. I wanted to die because at least then it would be over." Her breath shivered only faintly as she drew it in, rattling around her lungs with remembered agony. "I thought I was going to. Then I didn't think anything, because I couldn't.
"I wondered if you would come sometimes. You, or Light, or Kira. But none of you did." She closed her eyes as her voice trailed off, weariness overcoming her. "I don't have the energy to be angry with you Phoenix, I'm sorry to disappoint."

Phoenix spluttered and had to cover his mouth as a peal of laughter tried to escape. He turned away from her to hide his face. "Sorry," he stammered, "it's not funny." Though he was still on the edge of laughter when he turned back to her. "Are those the only three people you think care about you in the world?" He asked, fighting and only partially succeeding to keep his tone appropriate to the situation, "Light, Kira and me?"
