Chapter 1
The baby looked just as father had described. Thick, dark red locks were evident on the baby’s head. Java and Caramel stared at the baby curiously as the baby’s brown eyes gazed up at them from their mother’s arm.
“She looks just like daddy, doesn’t she?” Their mother said proudly.
Java had always admired her mother. Unlike what the rumors have said about the sorceress, she was actually a very kind person. Of course, it is not advisable to get on her bad side either for there was one little fact that the rumor passed on and that she is quite capable of using dark magic, powerful ones, to those who she considers her enemies. To her family, the sorceress Megan was a romantic wife and a doting mother.
“This is a memorable day for all of us.” ,came the voice of their aunt, Faye. She was idly sitting on a chair beside the Megan’s bed sipping tea. This woman is often mistaken as Caramel’s mother, because the both of them looked very like. They had the same silver hair and blue eyes albeit Faye’s hair was longer, carefully braided down to her hips. She always wears light colored dresses. She wore her favorite light blue dress made of satin today.
“Yes.” Megan replied as she smiled down at her youngest daughter. Megan and Faye are twins just like Java and Caramel. While Caramel looked like their aunt, Java was the exact younger version of their mother. Their mother had curly, raven hair and red eyes. Her hair might be messy from her labor, but she never looked more beautiful than she did then when she gazed proudly at her baby.
Megan is born from a family comprised of individuals capable of magic, both black magic and white magic. Some who are more talented in the arts of black magic become sorcerers who worked for kings. Those whose abilities lean more on white magic are likely to become acolytes or priestesses in temples or healers.
Their family served many kings and rulers for many centuries. Known throughout the land for their outstanding abilities in magic, people would either seek their assistance in tasks that requires magic or stay warily away from them out of fear. The nasty ones were more adapt on spreading rumors.
The interesting matter with this particular family of witches is that they can only produce female children, specifically female twins who bear opposite kinds of magic. It is rare for them to give birth to any more children.
“She’s special.” Java murmured poking the baby’s cheeks. The baby twisted in Megan’s arms and yawned.
“She’s so small.” Caramel commented, smiling.
“And she’s a third child. Not everyone in our family can bare more than two.” Faye stated.
“Is that a big deal?” Caramel asked kindly.
Faye nodded. “Why, yes! Being a third child gives one a certain ability or type of magic that nobody else in our family can do.”
Java turned now as her curiosity began to increase. “Abilities such as?”
“Take for example your grandmother Sasha. She was a third child and she had the ability to read people’s minds and see the future.”
Caramel’s eyes brightened with joy. She clapped her hands. “Wow… maybe our little sister will become a clairvoyant, too!”
“That may be possible, but I believe your little sister won’t necessarily acquire the same ability. It varies in every new generation, you see.” Faye explained patiently.
“Oh,” Caramel smiled. “Then I guess we’ll just have to find out for ourselves one she grows up.”
Java stared at the baby now with more intense. This baby is going to be gifted with magic none of her sisters may possess. She couldn’t help feeling excited but she remained quiet all the same.
“Would you like to hold her?” Megan said softly to her, causing Java to look at her mother in surprise.
“You won’t drop her. She may be small but she’s a very healthy baby.” Megan said as she carefully placed her baby into her eldest daughter.
Blinking, Java looked at the bundle in her arms. The baby was beginning to wake.
“By the way, Mom… What are you going to name her?”
“Oh my, I almost forgot.” Megan said slapping her cheek lightly. “How silly of me!”
“That makes two of us.” Faye cut in, laughing. “No doubt the excitement caused our temporary forgetfulness.”
The wooden door of their room burst open as their father came in. His cheeks were red and his smile wide. Beads of sweat were trickling down from his forehead. Java could have guessed that he ran throughout the entire castle shouting the news that his third daughter was finally born.
“Pierre, what happened to you?” Faye inquired. “You look like you’ve ran from miles.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.” Megan said with a giggle.
Pierre ignored the question thrown at him and walked to get a closer look at the baby in Java’s arms.
“She looks so much like me!! I’m the luckiest father in the whole world!!” He said shouting towards the ceiling with his arms thrown up above his head.
Java sighed. Her father was definitely an unusual man. He was loud, proud, energetic and funny. It was only she heard her mother clear her throat that her father stopped praising himself and the baby.
“Oh, Megan!” He said and knelt beside the bed close to Megan and clasped her hands with his. “You are also the most beautiful, smartest, most wonderful wife in all of creation!”
Megan pretended to be not affected, but it was obvious that she was flattered. Her smug smile was proof of it. She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Is that so?” She teased.
“Of course!! Never doubt it!” Pierre continued, his eyes glinting.
Caramel and Faye stifled a giggle. Pierre and Megan were known for enjoying this type of argument.
