Barbarian Kingdom of Tarkarus is located North of Destron from the coast back to the dark blotch. It was never had many true cities, they were more on the line of fortified villages. Now it is a mostly desolate land ravaged by the recent war it lost to Destron.
Tarkarus is a small kingdom of Barbarian warriors who worship the Goddess as a warrior queen and they believe the most honorable way for a warrior to die is in battle. The Kingdom came into being after Destron's founding but the people of Tarkarus have lived in what now is the remains of the kingdom for more than 2,500 years.
They started out as 12 tribes who constantly warred against each other or raided villages in what is now Destron. 150 years after Destron was founded a warrior chieftain of the largest tribe united the people of Tarkarus into a single kingdom under his rule.
Almost immediately there were border disputes with Destron as well as pirates from Tarkarus raiding Destronian ships. Over the next few centuries there were a series of small skirmishes. Then in the time of Prince Skipbeat's Great Grandfather came the first War in the Northlands in which the King's army routed Tarkarus' invading horde with few losses and forced them to cede the majority of Tarkarus' coastlands to Destron along with two very valuable mines in the peace treaty.
Not all the tribes agreed with the decision to make peace and there was much inter tribal warfare for many years to come. Destron called this period The Great Peace, a time in which the barbarians of the north were too busy killing one another to attack Destron and The Theocracy finally accepting them as a legitimate kingdom.
It wasn't to last, finally after nearly 80 years of conflict one chief seized the throne of Tarkarus, His true name isn't known but to Destronian historians he is called the King of Blood.
It was in his seventh year of kingship in which Tarkarus invaded Destron in revenge for their earlier defeat which they considered a great dishonor. This touched off the Second war in the Northlands. The war was fierce and bloody and no quarter given. The worst act of the war was an ambush under the guise of a prisoner exchange, the captured prince of Tarkarus and 5 other prisoners for two royal knights who had been captured by the King of Blood's forces. It was agreed that The King and Queen of each kingdom would come to the exchange. Senator Nadan who had negotiated the exchange assured the Royal Knights that Tarkarus' King was a man of honor who only wanted his son back safely and that nothing would go amiss and the King and Queen would be in no danger.
It was to take place in a small valley that straddled the disputed border. When all parties had arrived the ambush was sprung and the King and Queen of Destron and their guard of Royal Knights were hard put to it. they managed to get some of their men at arms out to get reenforcement, but they came too late, they defeated the Tarkarusian troops but the King, Queen and all the knights that had accompanied them had been slain or were mortally wounded. The four surviving Knights who had led the relief force swore an oath to their dying King to protect his children and Destron.
Word spread of the death of their beloved King, Queen and Royal Knights and how The King of Blood had used a prisoner exchange negotiated in good faith to murder them. This foul deed set the hearts and minds of the people of Destron ablaze with a blood lust for vengeance and the army reinforced with many new recruits marched into Tarkarus and slaughtered its army and razed the kingdom to the point it was reduced to a few scattered tribes filled with fear of the kingdom of Destron.
The King of Blood was captured and beheaded for his Heinous crime. The small valley now fully with in Destron's borders has become known as the Valley of the Countless Tears and a memorial to those who fell defending their King and Queen was built on the small hill where the last stand was made as it is considered sacred ground in Destron. It is said the souls of the fallen still guard the valley and the nearby village makes an offering to them every year on the anniversary of the battle.
Today the remaining people of Tarkarus live far inland where the farm and raise cattle and tell tales of wrath of Destron and how the last king's treachery brought them to ruin.
